My in-depth project has been going great so far, I’m glad I chose such an interesting and complex topic. I’ve created a few looks since my last post, but for some reason my laptop won’t let me upload the photos. The first look was simple and cute, I was in a good mood and decided to add little white hearts to the sides of my eyes. It was difficult to make the hearts look the same, in the future I may use a stencil or some other small, heart-shaped object to trace.

What kinds of learning opportunities does the mentor provide to expose you to new learning?

My mentor has provided me with a wide variety of resources: notes about the color theory, a cosmetology textbook, and makeup tutorial CDs. We’ve discussed MUA’s (Makeup Artists) on YouTube that I should watch, such as NikkieTutorials and Jeffree Star. She has given me all of the resources she has access to that are relevant to my specific project, and I’ve been learning a lot from them.

What kinds of learning opportunities exist to reinforce new learning?

One way to reinforce new learning is to practice all of the makeup skills that I’ve learned from my mentor so far. I could make my own tutorial for a look that she’s taught me, or create a new look. Repetition and LOTS of practice is the key to improving at makeup!

What kinds of opportunities exist that might accelerate learning?

There are many available opportunities that exist to accelerate learning. For example, my mentor spoke to me briefly about a full-day seminar happening at her school in May. This seminar is about the application and basic theories/strategies of makeup, and careers in the beauty industry as well. I’m most likely not going to attend the seminar – because I need to be at my own school during this time – but I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities my mentor is offering to me.

When you get together what do you talk about?

When we get together we talk about the eyeshadow palettes/highlighers/foundations/other makeup products that we like, how to properly apply makeup, how she got her makeup degree, products that I should invest in, etc. We discuss our plans for future meetings as well, and where I would like this project to go.

What is going particularly well in your mentoring relationship right now?

We’ve recently started actually doing makeup during our meetings, which I’m super happy about! At the last meeting we did our makeup together (she did hers first and I followed each step she completed), and it turned out great. I’m a visual/kinesthetic learner, so doing more hands-on activities during our meetings is working extremely well for me. I’m learning so much, way more than I would by merely listening to someone talk.

What are you learning about one another?

We discuss our personal lives during meetings as well, and I find it fascinating to learn about her past experiences with makeup (and cosmetology in general). She’s told me about her teaching, her makeup degree, and the discounts she gets at Mac because of her qualifications. We’ve talked about her three kids and new puppy quite frequently too. Additionally, I’ve enjoyed telling her about the TALONS program and my many experiences with adventure trips, eminent, leadership projects, etc.

That’s all!
